That didn’t work.” For a while, Beth and her stepdaughter’s stepfather did the communicating between households, but that ended up not working either. The whole group ended up back in courtordered mediation.

Eventually Beth’s stepdaughter was old enough to tell her parents what she was and was not willing to do, but the child is the one who suffered. Gretchen helped her family by stepping into the role of communicator with the other household.

But because the ex was verbally abusive to her, Gretchen insisted that all communications were to be either faxed or e-mailed. No phone calls happened between any of the adults in this stepfamily unit.
