The Journey Continuing (10)

Surprisingly, the move from Asia to Russia went very smoothly. I say this as a bit of a “moving expert,” having moved just about every year since I first went to boarding school at the age of fourteen, including moves from Baltimore to Singapore, Singapore to Russia, Russia back to the United States, the United States to London, and finally London back to the United States, not to mention moves within Russia and moves within London.

So, I was careful when deciding what to bring to Asia and Russia, leaving all the valuable items safely in storage. But three years later, when it came to London and buying the first place of my own, I decided I should have all my favorite things and irreplaceable items like photographs, souvenirs, etc., with me, as I was really making a home there.

Of course, life never works out exactly as you plan, and so, not long after, there I was moving again. But this time, I had no fear. It would be an easy move—from the UK to the United States—developed market to developed market. Little did I know the container would get flooded, and I’d lose almost everything. I’ll never forget picking through the moldy debris of my precious possessions. My china and ceramics had survived the heat and water, but most of my Persian carpets, Chinese scrolls, Korean wooden chests, Russian boxes—not to mention photos, yearbooks, etc.— had been permanently damaged or destroyed. The lesson for me: while moving is always a hassle, I now know it’s also always a risk. So, don’t move what you can’t imagine living without.
