Although water is not really a nutrient, it is so essential for human life that you can survive only a few days without it. Approximately two-thirds of your body is composed of water, and all cell processes and organ functions depend on it.
Water also acts as a lubricant, moves food through the intestinal tract, and helps regulate body temperature. The standard recommendation is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. This isn’t a magic number, but it will ensure adequate hydration for most healthy people.
